Butterfly Effects

I've never been a fan of the capitalist world of marketing and sales. The idea of "selling oneself" behind "branding" has never resonated with me, and it still doesn't. So, what am I doing here?

Yes, there are moments when I feel like an imposter, fake, and inadequate.
But then, the publication of my book forced me to confront the truth. If I want it to reach the right hearts, I have to make it visible. Perhaps marketing can be a way to find friends and communities, and it's not merely a "money-seeking monster."
And then, how else can you get your voice out there? One of the texts that has profoundly impacted my studies is Spivak's "Can the Subaltern Speak?" Can we or will we ever hear marginal voices? If I hear them, does it mean they've somehow been tainted, that they're now just part of the system, part of the power they aimed to challenge? Or perhaps they represent an "intimate outsider" that can slowly, subtly, and gently change everything from within? No dramatic leaps, just tiny changes. Ones that matter.

I believe in the power of butterfly effects, of small gestures producing enormous changes down the road. It's how we can explain that every individual gesture we make can have significant consequences for the future and for our communities. Maybe if I recycle a plastic bottle today and don't leave the water running for too long... Maybe that doesn't seem like much, perhaps it appears trivial. It definitely won't solve the larger problem of plastic waste. But it does move us in the right direction, and that matters.

Yet, these are the things that matter.
That smile, hug, or text you sent me. That recycled bottle. Those moments when you show up.
So, this is how I rationalize my recent blogging and "branding" efforts and everything else you see here... as another way for me to show up.
What do you think of the power of small actions? Or what's your experience with marketing? Share any thoughts...
